Meet the Summer 2014 Staff: Part 2

Last week, we finished introducing the Summer 2014 Support Staff! Today, we'll meet four more of our Summer 2014 Staff! Every week, we’ll be introducing more and more Summer 2014 staff, so stay tuned! To see the bios of staff we already introduced, CLICK HERE!

We thought we’d start off our counselor bios with three new Pendalouan Summer Staff members. Some of them came to Pendalouan as campers, others will be joining the Camp family this year! Please join me in welcoming Sean, Ellie, Brandon and Brooke!

Hi! My name is Sean and I am a student at Grand Valley State University! I am studying for my degree in Secondary Education to become a German and History teacher. I am happy to say that this will be my first year as a camp counselor at Pendalouan. I love being outdoors in the summer and hiking. I was fortunate enough to actually be able to go hiking in the Austrian Alps last May while on an exchange trip! I also enjoy kayaking, riding horses, swimming - pretty much anything to stay active. I love making paracord bracelets or making anything with string! I'm a pretty easy going guy and I love to have fun and make new friends. I'm so excited to be joining the family at Camp Pendalouan and can't wait for Summer 2014 to get started!

Hi everyone! My name is Ellie and I'm super pumped for what will be my 7th summer at Pendy and my 1st year on staff! At home in Oak Park, Illinois you can probably find me pole vaulting, baking cookies or running crazy experiments with Chemistry Club. I am so excited to meet everyone, play some capture the flag, sing some songs and have an AWESOME summer! See you all soon!

My name is Brandon and I am so excited to join the 2014 Staff! I am 17 years old and my mom lives in Grand Haven and my dad lives in Fremont. In my free time I like to fish and run! During the summer, I like going to the beach, playing football, vollyball, frisbee, or soccer. I run track and Cross Country at Grand Haven High School. I am exited to work at camp this summer and cant wait to meet my fellow staff and campers!

Hi! My name is Brooke and this will be my first year as a camp counselor at Camp Pendalouan. I am so excited to meet the campers and all of the great adventures that are in store for this summer. While I am not at camp, I enjoy running, hiking, photography and pretty much anything outdoors. Can't wait for this summer, and to meet all of you!

We hope you enjoyed getting to know the first four of our 2014 summer camp counseling staff! We’ll be introducing more staff as we get closer to summer... so stay tuned!

Introducing... OUR SUMMER 2014 STAFF!

It's that time again! With Summer 2014 less than 50 days away, it is about time to start introducing the Summer 2014 Staff! We are so excited for Summer 2014 and we having been working hard for the past several months to make sure this is one of the best summers yet!

Throughout the next several weeks, we'll continue to post about events, traditions, activities & other exciting Pendalouan developments right here on the Camp Blog, but we will also be posting short bios of our Summer 2014 Staff. If you want to make sure you see every single post, you can sign up to receive each post in your inbox. All you have to do is type your email in the box on the left side of the page under "Follow the Camp Blog By Email!"

We hope you are as excited as we are to see familiar and new faces. We have an awesome crew this year who cannot wait for summer. So without further ado... the first Summer 2014 YMCA Camp Pendalouan Staff introductions! Let's meet our 2014 Support Staff:

My name is Katie and this will be my second year returning as Pendalouan's Summer Program Director. I absolutely cannot wait for summer and am already busy planning the fun and adventures! While at camp, I enjoy splashing around in Big Blue Lake, eating the delicious foil dinners on Tuesday nights, paddleboarding, and joining in on the singing and skits at opening campfire. When I'm not at camp, I love to hike, run, go on adventures and travel. Looking forward to meeting all of you and wishing we could all just fast forward to summer! Bring on the warmth and sunshine!

Hi there! My name is Courtney and I am thrilled to be Day Camp Director again this summer. This will be my second summer at Camp Pendalouan. I am from Ontario Canada, and I have also spent time living in West Virginia. I am currently working at Camp getting ready for summer and working with school groups in Pendalouan's Outdoor Education program. I love being outside and am so excited for Day Camp this summer! I can't wait for the campers to arrive so I can hear music and laughter throughout camp everyday.

Hey everyone! My name is Gretchen, and I am so excited to be spending another amazing summer at YMCA Camp Pendalouan! This will be my 5th summer on staff, and my first as Waterfront Director! I cannot wait to spend my days on the shores of Big Blue Lake getting to know each and every one of you. :) I will be entering my senior year at Northern Michigan University this fall to finish up my degree in Elementary Education, and I love spending time in the great outdoors. When I am not at the waterfront making sure everyone is safe, you can find me just about anywhere in camp! I am counting down the days until summer arrives and we can start singing songs, eating s'mores and making many new friends! Summer 2014, here we come!

Hey everybody! Robyn here! I'm back for Summer 2014 as Equestrian Director again. It is going to be a great summer at Pendy. I'm looking forward to capture the flag, the cupcake bar, foil dinners, lunch out at the barn, and hanging out with the horses. I hope to see everyone up at the barn either for trail rides, cabin activity time, and/or Ropers and Wranglers. One of my goals this summer is to learn how to Whistle. So if you have some tricks of that trade, please find me at camp and let me know! Can't wait to see everyone's smiling faces at Camp Pendalouan!

Hi everyone! My name is Bridgett and with me in my picture is Duke! Summer of 2014 will be our first year at Pendalouan and we are both very excited to meet everyone! I am a sophomore in college at Central Michigan University majoring in outdoor recreation with a minor in natural resources. I grew up in a very small town with my parents and my one older brother. Loving animals throughout my entire life I found my passion of horses at a very young age and before I knew it, I was the proud owner of one. Duke came into my life as a gift to me when I graduated high school. Duke is an Off the Track Thoroughbred (OTTB) and he is 14 years old. We both love the outdoors and going on long trail rides. One of our favorite activities on a warm summer day is to find a big patch of green grass to mow down. Duke and I cannot wait to see what this summer has in store for us! We look forward to meeting each and every one of you!

Hello everyone! My name is Elizabeth and I can’t wait to head back to Pendalouan for my 12th summer under the stars. I will once again be your Friendly Neighborhood Health Officer, always ready with a band-aid. I’m currently finishing up an Americorps program in Denver, Colorado, and I am so excited to come back to Michigan and be able to look at the lake every day! Big Blue Lake definitely tops the list of my favorite things at camp, but I also enjoy foil dinners, opening and closing campfire, square dances, archery, and singing in the lodge during clean up way too loudly. Summer can’t come soon enough.

We are thrilled to have Katie, Courtney, Gretchen, Robyn, Bridgett (and Duke) and Elizabeth joining us this summer at Pendalouan in our summer leadership positions. We'll keep introducing staff here on the blog... so stay tuned to meet more amazing Pendalouan Summer 2014 Staff!

Parents, make sure your child is able to experience all the fun and character-building that these staff members will provide. Sign up for Summer Camp today; before our waiting lists start forming! Call us if you have any questions at (231) 894-4538.

Spring Volunteer Work Day Recap!

Great Bear needed a facelift... and our volunteers gave it the attention
it needed.

This past Sunday, a group of about 20 Alumni, Campers, Friends & Staff of Pendalouan got together to work on a few major projects around Pendalouan for our annual Spring Volunteer Work Day! The weather forecast called for rain, but we were lucky to have a clear (and even sunny at times) day. Over the course of the day, our volunteers worked on the following projects:

  • Clearing, raking, and spreading new sand around the Great Bear Fire Circle
  • Assembling 15 new leopold benches
  • Unpacking and organizing the Camp Costume Closet
  • Doing some landscaping and planting bulbs around our new Welcome Pavilion
  • Setting up things in our Hoop House

The event was a huge success! As Bruce Spoelman, Executive Director said while gathering for snacks at the end of the day, "It would have taken several weeks to accomplish all these activities on our own. With your help, we did it all in a day!" Several of these projects were especially timely, because there are very few days in the next several months when there is not a group in camp for Outdoor Education, retreats or summer camp!

A special thanks to all who made it out to help us on these important projects and who made all this work possible! Our 2014 Volunteers: Andrea and Kameron Walter, Courtney Rzepka, Bob Jakubowski Jr., Kaitie Waukonen, Robyn, Tami and Reya Devio, Rob Klein, Matt Mason, Kathy Stratton and Claire Cebelak, Roger Rogoski, Thomas Green, John Usmial, Katie Spoelman, Bruce and Margaret Spoelman, Lori Willson, Mark Olson

We've had so many people asking about volunteering that we have created a list of ways to help out for those interested in volunteering for/at Pendalouan. Click here to see all of the opportunities! There is always work to do! Luckily, Pendalouan is blessed with a great group of individuals and families who care about Pendalouan and support it with their time and energy.

Thanks again to all who volunteered for our work day and all of those individuals and families who volunteer throughout the year! Pendalouan cannot thrive without your help and assistance! If you have any questions about volunteering, feel free to give us a call at camp at (231) 894-4538 or send Mark Olson, Alumni & Development Director, an email at molson@pendalouan.org.
