2014: The Year In Review!

2014: The Highlight Reel

It’s the end of another year... and what a year it’s been for YMCA Camp Pendalouan! New ideas and exciting plans have been brewing for 2015, but before taking the leap into the New Year, let’s look back at some of the highlights of 2014:

  • We had a RECORD BREAKING SUMMER! Over 1,000 overnight and day campers joined us on the shores of Big Blue Lake this summer! If we could school and outside group campers, the number is even higher! We had more waiting lists than we’ve ever had before (we're expecting more in 2015!)

  • Thanks to some of our incredible alumni & donors, we are able to appreciate the beautiful view from the new deck at Wildwood Chapel (below).
  • Every weekend between summer camp sessions was full this year. From weekend family camps such as Mom & Kids Camp, Father-Son Camp and Family Camp to Stay-Over weekends, we rarely had a day this summer that wasn't full of campers and guests of all ages making Pendalouan memories!
  • A record number of women joined us for Women's Adventure Weekend 2014! Over 75 ladies came to Camp to relax, rejuvenate and participate in camp activities like the high ropes course, a canoe trip and tye-dye! That is double the number of participants of past years!
  • A big thank you to the over 80 alumni and friends that came out for Pendalouan Day 2014! Click here to see pictures and find out who attended.
  • We opened up registration for our 2015 programs on December 1st! A lot of camper families are taking advantage of our drawing... if you register for a week of overnight camp before the end of the year, you'll be entered to win a FREE 2nd week! We've had a lot of registrations! We're so excited to pick and announce a winner!
We have so much to be cheerful about this Holiday season! Thank you to everyone for your support, time, donations and well-wishes. Exciting things are unfolding in 2015… We'll see you there.

Hail Pendalouan!

Tis the Season... for Camp Gifts!

The Holiday season is full of friends, family, food and fun.  But there's also the gift giving part of it all. The busyness of the season can sometimes make picking out the perfect gift harder than you thought.

Have no fear! We've once again come up with a list of gift ideas to get the creativity flowing for the Camp Pendalouan fan in your family. Here are some campy gift ideas for all of you camp enthusiasts:
  • Trading Post Apparel - Wear your Pendy pride with you wherever you go. Pendalouan shirts, hoodies, hats, bandanas, you name it! Give camp a call to order at (231) 894-4538. You can also buy Trading Post gift certificates!
  • Tie Dye Kit - This along with a white t-shirt makes an awesome gift that will get any camper (young and old) in the summer camp mindset.
  • YCP Songbook - Songs are a huge part of the camp tradition.  Songbooks hold the classics, the shenanigans, and all the Pendalouan favorites. You can buy a copy of the YMCA Camp Pendalouan Songbook by giving us a call at (231) 894-4538. They are only $3.00 (+ the cost of shipping)!
  • S’mores kit - Marshmallows, chocolate, graham crackers, and the perfect roasting stick.
  • Book of Campfire Stories - Anyone who attends summer camp will remember the stories told around the fire. Share the experience with your friends and family by compiling your favorite stories and gifting it to a friend or your camper.
  • Scented candle - A lot of memories are associated with a certain smell. Bring the scent of camp and the outdoors into your home with a candle such as ‘Silver birch’ or ‘Balsam & Cedar.’
  • Seeds - Fill your garden with wildflowers and the beauty of nature! Or if your camper was in the Garden Club while at camp, perhaps start compiling materials for a backyard garden!
  • Nature Hike Guide Book - A book on tree identification, outdoor survival or leaf & flower pressing is great for all ages.
  • A Handmade Craft - From lanyards and friendship bracelets to God's eyes and nature weaving. Noting says Summer Camp like a thoughtful handmade craft.
  • Photo Album/Scrap Book - Bring back memories of carefree summers, crazy songs and unique friendships with a collection of camp photos.
  • Memory Box - Another handmade gift from the heart. Decorate a box dedicated to camp memories, crafts and trinkets.
And last but certainly not least…

  • A Pendalouan Experience! - Send your loved one to Pendalouan this summer! Whether it's overnight, day or family camp, the gift of camp and time at Pendalouan is one of the greatest gifts someone can receive. (And if you register for a week of overnight camp before Jan. 1st, 2015, you'll be entered into a drawing to win a free additional week of camp!)

Whether you are a last-minute shopper, are looking for ideas for next year, or just want to give someone a gift that you can't just pick off the shelf, we hope this list is helpful for you! Spread the Pendalouan Spirit by focusing on camp this Holiday Season!

Keeping the Camp Spirit Alive... All Year Long!

During our closing campfires in the summer, we tell our overnight campers that the best part of the Pendalouan Spirit is that you can take it with you wherever you go and share it with others!

As the weather gets colder, summer camp feels farther and farther away. Here’s a list of ways of what you or your camper can do during the school year to keep the Spirit of Pendalouan alive and strong all year long:

  • Sing Good Morning to Mr. Zip Zip when you wake up - no matter how far away from camp you live!
  • Share your favorite camp stories with friends and family members.
  • Explain the four core values  (Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Caring) and camp motto (I'm Third!) to your friends, teachers, and family members.
  • Contact the camp office to see if they can help you find a camper's (or alum's) contact information that you would like to pen-pal with. Don't worry, we'll ask permission before sharing any contact info with anyone.
  • Celebrate others when they practice the four core values or accomplish something. There are always reasons to celebrate!
  • Challenge yourself; keep trying things you have never tried before.
  • Even if you can’t sing well, sing loud! (Camp songbooks make great Holiday gifts! Contact us to order one or more!)
  • Just as our cabin groups do every night of summer camp, take a little time to reflect on your day with a "Taps Talk." What were the lows of your day and highs of your day?
  • Head to a nearby park or nature reserve and take a hike with your family!
  • Write to your favorite counselor by addressing an envelope to them and sending it to camp. We'll make sure it gets to them!
  • Sing a camp song after every meal!
  • Talk to a fellow classmate you don't know very well, you might have a lot in common.
  • Be yourself! Camp doesn't have to be the only place where you are the person you want to be!
  • Keep a positive attitude and smile!
  • You may not have to sweep the lodge, but still make a habit of keeping your personal space neat. That's right... clean your room campers!
  • Sing to Mr. Moon before going to bed.

Remember, you don’t have to be at camp to demonstrate the four core values, sing camp songs, or do a Taps Talk. You can share Pendalouan with everyone you meet!

But summer is a mere 7 months away! And we recently announced dates and rates for our 2015 programs on our website. Paper registration opens December 1st, so check them out. An added bonus: if you register for a week of overnight camp before the end of 2014, you'll be automatically entered to win a free session of camp!

Halloween Camp 2014 Recap!

Last weekend an awesome and enthusiastic group of Campers joined us for 24 hours of Halloween fun!  Over 85 campers and staff enjoyed traditional camp activities, songs and meals—all with a Halloween twist!

Friday evening began with campers meeting their counselors, playing sandlot games like, 4 square, GaGa and Scatterball. A spooky dinner was served: spaghetti and blood (marinara) sauce with dirt and worms (pudding, Oreos and gummy worms) for dessert. Returning campers were amazed to see Pendalouan in the Fall with leaves blowing and Nikana Lodge fully decorated with Halloween fun!

The festivities continued with a good ol' fashioned Pendalouan Hootenanny. Cabins traveled around camp participating in different challenges and group games, including the Haunted Trail (scare-factor modified for each age group). Camp joined back together for a traditional Pendalouan Campfire at Great Bear Fire Circle!

Saturday greeted us with beautiful fall weather! In fact, it was the best weather we've had for Halloween Camp in years! 67 degrees and sunny! Campers were able to choose between activities such as Archery, the Climbing Wall, Halloween crafts, a Sleepy Hollow Hike and more. Before lunch, camp regrouped for all camp games on the sports field.

After lunch, we gathered on the deck of the lodge for a camp favorite, (with a Halloween twist) Capture the Scarecrow! After the Scarecrows were assempled, Campers changed into their costumes and joined the hunt for the missing candy. When the candy was discovered and eaten, we finished off the weekend with a Halloween Carnival. Games like Cornhole, Pin the Wart on the Witch, Bingo, Mummify-a-Counselor and more were played in and around the lodge.

A big thank you to all who could make it!  If you didn’t get the chance to come this year, be sure to mark your calendar for 2015!

We'll see you next year for Halloween Camp 2015!

A Tribute to Eddie Boersema

Last weekend at Pendalouan Day, we unveiled plans for the new Eddie Boersema Education & Activity Center. This project has been in development for the past two years and we're excited that it finally is coming into fruition. If you haven't heard about the plans for this new camp building, take a look below to learn more about it!

The Education and Activity Center will honor Eddie Boersema, a former camper and staff person who spent over six decades serving Pendalouan summer camps. This new building will provide opportunities for our next generation of campers to begin their own legacy at Pendalouan.

The new facility will be used as a classroom and activity area during all four seasons and will add improved indoor meeting space for outdoor education classes, other group meetings, and families-- especially during foul weather or those cold Michigan winters.

In addition to being an orientation and teaching space, the new building will provide secure storage for cross country skis, mountain bikes, and High Adventure equipment (High Ropes Course, Zip Line, and Climbing Wall). This new space will also allow us to remove two well-used storage sheds at the new location.

An additional benefit of this project is that the basement will house the staff lounge, which frees up other buildings during the Summer/Winter months, increasing Pendalouan's bed capacity without building a new cabin. The Education and Activity Center will also include a steel roof, a stone fireplace and a donor-designed covered deck.

This project is the genesis of a group of alumni who wanted to make a difference at camp and worked with camp staff to identify needs and find a solution. John and Kathy Workman were proud to use their naming rights to honor Eddie. John spent 7 years as a camper at Pendalouan and 2 years working in the kitchen. This past summer his grandson attended Father-Son Camp, continuing the tradition as a 4th generation participant.

Eddie Boersema is an icon at Pendalouan. He taught swim lessons, lead nature hikes and told campfire stories to thousands of campers. His history with Pendalouan begins in the 1930’s as a camper and then a counselor. He later served as the Waterfront Director as well as the Nature & Hiking coordinator and his legendary stories and clever tall tales are still told to this day.

Eddie passed away in 2009 after 66 summers at Pendalouan.  Campers and staff from every decade remember him and appreciate what he gave us.

We are thrilled to see this project come to life, and honor a man who inspired us all with his stories, spirit, and passion for Camp Pendalouan. We thank everyone who has contributed so far.

There are still some giving and naming opportunities available for this project. Please contact Bruce Spoelman, Executive Director, at bspoelman@pendalouan.org or Mark Olson, Alumni & Development Director, at molson@pendalouan.org for questions or to participate in this tribute to Eddie.

Hail Pendalouan!

“It’s like coming home…”: Pendalouan Day 2014 Recap

This past Saturday, over 85 alumni and friends came out to camp to celebrate Pendalouan's 90s years of making an impact on people's lives.

Not even the rainy and chilly weather could prevent former campers and staff and their families from returning to Big Blue Lake. In between drizzling rain, they were out around camp shooting bows and arrows, climbing at the climbing wall or even going for boat rides.

In the lodge, memory displays with old camper handbooks, photos, newspaper articles, staff manuals, camp newsletters and other mementos were out on tables to examine and bring back old memories. We also had a slide show with more recent photos from the past few summers. Movies of Eddie’s played in the classroom throughout the day.

MORE PICTURES FROM THE EVENT COMING SOON TO OUR FACEBOOK PAGE

Bruce Spoelman, Executive Director, took a large group of alums on a tour in the morning. Since some alumni had not been back at Pendalouan since their camper days, it was an exciting tour. One exclaimed, “A lot has changed since I’ve last been here… for the better! But it still feels like the same old camp.”

The bell rang for lunch and everyone gathered for a brief introduction by Mark Olson, Alumni & Development Director. He and Bruce updated everyone on some recent developments and other exciting news. After a delicious fall meal, attendees introduced themselves and told their connection to Pendalouan. It was fun to hear which alumni overlapped!

It was great to have so many different decades and types of alumni (former campers, former staff, current campers/staff, parents, volunteers, supporters and friends) represented.

Oldest Year Represented: 1937 (Bill Paulson)
Most Represented Decade: 1970s and 2000s (It was a tie!)
For a full list of who attended: click here.

After lunch, we watched our new donor thank you video and took the all group photo. Then we dedicated the new deck and boardwalk of Wildwood Chapel and revealed plans for the Eddie Boersema Education and Activity Center. For pictures and to read more about these projects, click here. (For an in-depth blog post on the E.B.E.A.C., click here.)

After the dedications, activity areas were once again opened for alumni and their families to enjoy. A hike to Sleepy Hollow was also offered. Typical of oral tradition, the stories have changed over the years, but – as had happened in the past - one 1940s alum commented on how much of the stories are still the same.

There might be no better way to spend a day than swapping camp stories with fellow Pendalouan alumni and friends. "This is the place I became who I am today," one alum said (and several echoed).

Thanks to all of our alumni and friends who made it out to Pendalouan Day! If you couldn't make it, we still want to hear from you! Contact Alumni Director, Mark Olson at molson@pendalouan.org or by calling the office at (231) 894-4538 x104.

Summer 2014 Recap!

Summer 2014 was one for the books, with a record number of overnight, day and family campers joining us on the shores of Big Blue Lake for a Pendalouan Summer Camp Experience.

As we've begun our Fall programs (such as our Outdoor Education and Seasonal programs), we've also been evaluating our Summer here at camp (while also preparing for Summer 2015!). Here are some of the highlights from Summer 2014:
  • We had over 1,000 overnight and day campers spend a week or more at Pendalouan  making friends, building character, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Once again, we had several sessions and specialty camps fill up, which meant more waiting lists this summer than we've had in years!  These numbers don't even include the campers that came for field trips through other summer programs or any of our family campers!
  • Our overnight camp featured some amazing new activities such as Gardening, Outdoor Cooking, Circus Training, Yoga & Meditation, Self Defense, and the Pendy Choir.
  • The 2014 Summer Staff collectively contributed over $1,400 of their own money for Pendalouan's Campership Fund. What a testament to how much they believe in their own work!
  • There were several new t-shirt and sweatshirt designs in the Trading Post with new colors and… Neon!
  • Over 110 fathers, sons, grandpas, and uncles came out for our Father-Son Camp weekend... one of Pendalouan's longest running traditions!
  • The breathtaking view and new deck of Wildwood Chapel made Evening Taps (all camp song singing) unforgettable.
Below are just some of the photos taken this summer. For more, check out our Facebook Page and the Photo Album on our Website.

It truly was an amazing summer here at Camp Pendalouan! Throughout the summer, we had warm wishes, visits, and donations from alumni, parents and other members of the Pendalouan community who were too old to come to Summer Camp. We thank everyone for helping us making Summer 2014 one of the best ever!
