Halloween Camp 2013 Recap!

Last weekend, we had our biggest Halloween Camp in Pendalouan history! From 5pm Friday to 5pm Saturday, over 100 campers enjoyed traditional camp activities, games, and meals - all with a Halloween twist!

Friday night started with campers meeting their counselors, playing games like 4 Square, GaGa, and Scatterball, and eating a meal that you wouldn't see during regular summer camp (see left)... Returning campers were amazing to see what Pendy looks like in the Fall and to see Nikana Lodge decorated with Halloween lights, pictures and props!

In the evening, cabin groups took turns walking through our Haunted Health Lodge. The scare-factor was adjusted for each age level as to make sure our younger campers were not too frightened. Cabins also competed against each other in the Halloween Camp Hootenanny, a series of challenges that included block stacking, stuffed animal tossing, relay races and more! Camp then joined back all together for a good ol' fashioned Pendalouan Campfire at Great Bear Fire Circle!

On Saturday, campers were able to choose between Archery, the Climbing Wall, a Pumpkin Craft, BB Guns, Parachute Games, Candle-making, a Sleepy Hollow Hike and more! Before lunch we also played an all camp game where campers were split up as either Dentists or Halloween Creatures to see which team had the most Halloween spirit!

After lunch, we had more camp activities and then we played a game of Capture the Flag! Campers then changed into their costumes and went looking for clues to see where all the Halloween candy was hidden! After putting all the puzzle pieces together and getting their candy, all of camp met up to finish the weekend with a Halloween Carnival in and around the lodge. Games included: Pin the Wart on the Witch, Pumpkin Bozo Buckets, Mummify-A-Counselor, Bingo, and more!

Thanks to all who could make it! If you didn't get the chance to come this past year, make sure to mark your calendar for next year (October 24-25, 2014) to guarantee a spooktacular good time!

A Reunion Like No Other: Pendalouan Day 2013 Recap

Greetings from Beautiful Big Blue Lake!

This past Saturday, over 170 alumni and friends came out to camp to celebrate Pendalouan's more than 85 years of making an impact on people's lives.

The weather was perfect - 60s and sunny! And the rain that was forecasted never showed up and we all stayed dry all day! Former campers and their families were out around camp shooting bows and arrows, climbing at the climbing wall or even going for a boat ride.

In the lodge, memory displays with old camper handbooks, photos, newspaper articles, staff manuals, camp newsletters and other mementos were out on tables to examine and bring back old memories. We also had a slide show with more recent photos from the past few summers.

Bruce Spoelman, Executive Director, took a large group of alums on a tour in the morning. Since some alumni had not been back at Pendalouan since their camper days, it was an exciting tour. Many of the alumni commented that they were impressed at the improvements around camp.

The bell rang for lunch a little around noon and everyone gathered for a brief introduction by Mark Olson, Alumni & Development Director. He and Bruce updated everyone on some recent developments and other exciting news. After a delicious fall meal, attendees introduced themselves and told their connection to Pendalouan. It was fun to hear which alumni overlapped!

It was great to have so many different decades and types of alumni (former campers, former staff, current campers/staff, parents, volunteers, supporters and friends) represented.

Oldest Year Represented: 1937 (Bill Paulson)
Most Represented Decade: 1960s

After lunch and the all group photo, we dedicated our new wood-burning gasification boiler, trail lights and Welcome Pavilion. Thank you to the Muskegon Y's Club, the Paul Stearns family, the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, Lowell Dana, our 2013 Father-Son Campers, Pratt & Whitney, Peter Damm and other donors from the greater Pendalouan Community who helped make these projects possible. For pictures and to read more about these projects, click here.

After the dedications, activity areas were once again opened for alumni and their families to enjoy. A Hike to Sleepy Hollow was also offered. Typical of oral tradition, the stories have changed over the years, but one 1950s alum commented on how much of the stories are still the same.

Our last activity was an all group Songfest at Wildwood Chapel. Recent and our more seasoned alumni helped lead songs such as Little Cabin in the Woods, An Austrian Went Yodeling, Hail Pendalouan, Good Morning Mr. ZipZip, Johnny Rebeck and others!

There might be no better way to spend a day than swapping camp stories with fellow Pendalouan alumni and friends. "This is where I found out how to be a good person," one alum said (and several echoed).

Thanks to all of our alumni and friends who made it out to Pendalouan Day! If you couldn't make it, we still want to hear from you! Contact Alumni Director, Mark Olson at molson@pendalouan.org or by calling the office at (231) 894-4538.

Women's Adventure Weekend 2013 Recap!

This past weekend, 59 women (a record number!) joined together on the shores of Big Blue Lake for Women's Adventure Weekend, our fall women-only weekend that provides fun, relaxation, and friendship to whomever signs up!

More pictures to come!
Friday evening was full of fun and introductions as the women settled into their cabins and got to know each other with some group games and make-your-own pizza in Nikana Lodge. Following the late dinner, some women elected to take a Night Hike! Many of the women said that the Night Hike was their favorite part of the weekend. Afterwards, several women gathered together and had small fires in some of the several fire pits around camp.

Saturday was jam-packed with activities! After breakfast, Archery, Slingshots, BB Guns, Christmas Ornament-making and Tye-Dye were provided. In addition to these target sports and crafts, the zipline and our high ropes course was open to the group.

After lunch, many of the women went on a canoe trip down the White River, while others relaxed by the lake on our Adirondack chairs or with a boat ride. The climbing wall, candle-making, yoga, a hike to Sleepy Hollow and our compass course were also open to enjoy!

The evening offered tomahawk throwing, high ropes, BB guns and our twilight zipline. Some women, however elected to just relax by the shores of Big Blue Lake with a good book.

On Sunday morning, there was one last chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery, take a boat ride, fly down the zipline, shoot an arrow and tackle the climbing wall. Then, it was time to head home!
"I had a spectacular weekend with friends kayaking, conquered the 50' rock climbing wall, attempted paddle board yoga stunts, laughed my bum off, traversed high ropes course, canoed the river while playing clever autumn inspired games... Another memorable year!"
With near-perfect weather and a great group of women, this weekend could not have gone any better. We can't wait to see them all next year and maybe you or someone you know will join them!

Meet the Summer 2013 Staff: Part 6

The staff just keep on coming! Today, we are going to meet Kelly, Dalton, Lila and Ruth! Take a moment to check these 2013 counselors out!

Hey everyone! My name is Kelly and I am beyond thrilled to be coming back to Pendalouan for my third summer on staff. I've spent my past year attending the University of Utah, having an amazing time skiing, hiking and rock climbing in the gorgeous mountains out here (oh, and studying of course!). But it's just about time to say goodbye for the summer and I could not be more excited! I cannot wait to be back on the shores of Big Blue Lake going on lake swims, making foil dinners, singing silly songs and making amazing memories! See you soon!

Hey guys! My name is Dalton and this will be my tenth summer spent on Big Blue Lake! Ever year I look forward to spending my summer at Camp Pendalouan and creating memories and friendships that last a lifetime! My favorite camp activities to do include synchronize swimming, arts and crafts, and singing camp songs! I can't wait to have an amazing fun-filled Camp Pendalouan summer!

HELLOOOO to the campers, parents of campers, and other fans of YMCA Camp Pendalouan! My Name is Lila and this is going to be my ninth summer spent on the shores of Big Blue. I'm from Chicago, Illinois, but I'm currently finishing up my freshmen year at Pacific University just outside Portland, Oregon. I could not be more excited to be coming back to camp this summer! I've missed the beautiful lake, the delicious food, the wonderful people, and most of all, making a fool of myself at any possible chance to make my campers smile. I'm really looking forward to way too many songs, games of Capture the Flag, and foil dinners. But more importantly, I can't wait to see all the new and returning campers and staff at YMCA Camp Pendalouan! I'll see you there soon!!!

Hey everybody! My name is Ruth, this is my second summer here at Pendy and I couldn't be more excited to get started! In the fall, I'll be starting internships to finish up my Therapeutic Rec degree from Central Michigan University. Until then, I can't wait to get back to the shores of Big Blue Lake for another exciting summer of swimming, crafts, foil dinners, and so much more. I'm looking forward to seeing both new and familiar faces, and am sure Summer 2013 will be the best one yet!

We are thrilled to have Kelly, Dalton, Lila and Ruth here this summer! Our staff are already preparing for Summer 2013... ARE YOU? Get your child signed up for summer camp or take a look at our Family Camps today!

Camp Gifts for Mom!

Happy Mother's Day to all!

Need a last minute Mother's Gift for a special mom in your life? We have three gift ideas that will make Mom feel all warm and fuzzy!

Mom & Kids Camp (July 12-14)
There may be no better gift to mom than a weekend where she can spend time with her children and NOT have to cook! That's right, at Mom & Kids Camp, we'll do the cooking while Mom & kids have fun doing activities like boating, archery, our climbing wall, horseback riding, and more! Participate in all the activities or go on hikes and swim at your own pace! It's Mom's decision!

Hot and filling meals are served family-style in picturesque Nikana Lodge overseeing Big Blue Lake. We have a variety of offerings at every meal, including vegetarian options. Cold water, fresh fruit and peanut butter and jelly are available throughout the day. Cabins and facilities are rustic, but clean. Spend some great quality time with the your kids.

Women's Adventure Weekend (September 27-29)
Then again... sometimes Mom needs a break from the family. Women's Adventure Weekend gives mom the opportunity to relax and rejuvenate in the woods with fellow 18 and over women. This weekend balances relaxation and outdoor recreation with optional activities like a river trip, campfires, high ropes, zipline, climbing wall, archery, crafts, kayaking and swimming in Big Blue Lake. Many participants comment that they love doing the same activities that their children had experienced only weeks before during Summer Camp!

Camp Pendalouan Gear
Of course, you can always give Mom something from the Pendalouan Trading Post. We have camp t-shirts, sweatshirts, sunglasses, water bottles and more in our camp store! This summer we will also be selling Pendalouan sweatpants! Moms love showing off their Pendy Pride and sharing with the world where they send their kid to camp! Call us at (231) 894-4538 if you would like to order an item over the phone!

Once again, Happy Mother's Day to all of our Moms out there in the Pendalouan Community. We appreciate all you do for your kids.

We Build Strong Kids at Pendalouan!

"Camp is a wonderful and powerful vehicle for positive youth development. Your kids will tell you they had a great time at camp, but as a father and as a clinical psychologist, I'll tell you that kids will grow in ways they won't even realize while they are at camp, but ways that will last them a lifetime."
- Dr. Chris Thurber, Psychologist at Phillips Exeter Academy, NH
If you ever went to or worked at summer camp for many years, you know exactly what Dr. Thurber is talking about in the above quote. Yes, camp is fun and games, but IT IS ALSO SO MUCH MORE.

Meet Four New Pendalouan Counselors!

Last week, we finished introducing the Summer 2013 Support Staff! Today, we'll meet the first four summer 2013 counselors! Every week, we’ll be introducing more and more Summer 2013 staff, so stay tuned! To see the bios of staff we already introduced, CLICK HERE!

We thought we’d start off our counselor bios with three new Pendalouan Summer Staff members. Some of them came to Pendalouan as campers, others will be joining the Camp family this year! Please join me in welcoming Karlene, Eric, Laura, and Liz!

Hello! My name is Karleen. I am a junior at Central Michigan University studying special and physical education. I am a part of the women’s water polo team as the coach and a player. Also, I am a part of Best Buddies at CMU; my buddy’s name is Suzie. She and I like to go to Big Boy on free pie Thursday! I love Adventure Time and Glee (I secretly want to be on Glee). When I first heard of Pendalouan, I fell in love. The grounds are beautiful and heard wonderful things about the campers and staff. I am so blessed and honored to work there this summer and to call myself a staff member. This summer, I am most excited to sing around the campfire and spend long days out on the water! See you soon!

Hi, my name is Eric. I'm from a small town near Camp Pendalouan. As a child I spent nine summers out at Pendy as a camper! Now things have come full circle as I have become a counselor. I'm excited to help create a fun environment for campers and help get them interested in new things! I am hoping that I will be able to teach kids about nature and camp. As an avid fisherman I hope to teach kids about the lake. I look forward to meeting all of you this summer!

Hi! My name is Laura and I am from Spring Lake, MI. I am attending Central Michigan University and I am going into elementary education. I love swimming, hiking, volunteering, and traveling. This is my first summer at Camp Pendalouan and I am so excited about it! I am most excited to meet all the campers and staff and have a great summer!

Hello! I'm Liz. I'm from a little town called Fruitport, Michigan (not too far from camp). I was a camper at Pendalouan for nine years, and it will be so fantastic to spend my tenth summer at camp with all of you! I like to read books, knit, and play four-square, and I most definitely cannot wait for the warm summer days and the yummy foil dinners! See y'all soon!

We hope you enjoyed getting to know the first four of our 2013 summer camp counseling staff! We’ll be introducing more staff as we get closer to summer... so stay tuned!

Parents and grandparents, our sessions are starting to fill and waiting lists are beginning to form (to see what's still available, click here)! Don't have your child get stuck on a waiting list; sign up for Summer Camp today! Call us if you have any questions at (231) 894-4538.

Meet the Rest of our Support Staff!

Last week, we introduced the first three members of the Summer 2013 staff! Today, we'll meet the rest of the 2013 Support Staff and next week, we start introducing our counselors! Let's get to know Tim, Leah, Robyn and Justine!

Greetings from Chicago! My name is Tim and I could not be more excited for another summer at Pendalouan! This will be my third summer working down at the beautiful T-dock as Waterfront Director. As a Pendalouan camper myself, let me tell you there is no better way to spend a week (or two!) of your summer than at Camp. When I'm not making sure everyone is safe and smiling at the waterfront, I love to spend time at the ropes course and beautiful Hiawatha beach. I recently graduated from Eastern Illinois University (Go Panthers!) with a degree in Elementary Education and am hoping to have a classroom teaching position for the fall. I am looking forward to helping everyone have a great summer! Get your towels ready, it's going to be a blast!

Hi! My name is Leah and I am this summer's Teen Director! I cannot wait to be at camp to work with the Counselors in Training (CITs) and Leaders in Training (LIT). I have spent the past 11 summers at Pendalouan, and this will be my fifth summer on staff! I am about to graduate from the University of Michigan with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Next year, I am heading back to Ann Arbor to get a master's
degree in Engineering. I have been counting down the days until I am back on the shores of Big Blue Lake and I am so excited that camp is almost here! I cannot wait until I am back at Pendy singing, climbing, cooking foil dinners, living on the loose, and most importantly, hanging out with all of you!

Hey Pendy Pals!!! I'm back for year 17. My name is Robyn and I will be returning again as the Equestrian Director for Summer 2013! I cant wait until I am up at the barn teaching kids how to groom, feed, and ride our horses! Oh yeah... and how to scoop poop! Besides being at the barn, I can't wait to be at the waterfront on a hot day or adopting a cabin to eat with on cook out night (yummy foil dinners followed by a good ol' s'more)! I also love a good game of Capture The Flag and camp carnivals. Cant wait to see everyone on the steps of the lodge or around a campfire singing songs, doing skits, and making memories! Come make memories and be part of the Summer 2013 Pendalouan family. See you all soon!

Hi everyone! My name is Justine, I'm a recent GVSU grad, and I will be the Assistant Equestrian Director this year. I am looking forward to meeting all of the staff, campers, and of course our horses! I have been around horses and riding them from a young age and am excited to show our campers how wonderful working with horses can be. When not on horseback, I enjoy reading, watching movies, and spending time with friends. During the fourth grade my class went to Camp Pendalouan during the winter, and everyone had a great time. This is my first summer at Camp Pendalouan and I am so excited to experience it! See you soon!

That wraps up our Support Staff! But stay tuned... because we haven't yet introduced out 2013 Summer Camp counselors! Parents, make sure your child is able to experience all the fun and character-building that these staff will provide to hundred of kids this summer! Don't get stuck on a waiting list; sign up for Summer Camp today! Introducing... OUR 2013 SUMMER STAFF!

It's that time again! With Summer 2013 less than 55 days away, it is about time to start introducing the Summer 2013 Staff! We are so excited for Summer 2013 and we having been working hard for the past several months to make sure this is one of the best summers yet!

Throughout the months of April, May & early June, we'll continue to post about events, traditions, activities & other exciting Pendalouan developments right here on the Camp Blog, but we will also be posting short bios of our Summer 2013 Staff. If you want to make sure you see every single post, you can sign up to receive each post in your inbox. All you have to do is type your email in the box on the right side of the page under "Follow the Camp Blog By Email!"

I hope you are as excited as we are to see familiar and new faces. We have an awesome crew this year who cannot wait for summer. So without further ado... the first three Summer 2013 YMCA Camp Pendalouan Staff introductions!

Hello campers! I hope you are getting ready for a fun-filled summer at YMCA Camp Pendalouan! My name is Katie and I am thrilled to be returning to the beautiful shores of Big Blue Lake as your 2013 Program Director. Some of the things I am most excited for this summer include playing capture the flag, re-connecting with old friends and meeting all of you, and laughing and singing around one of our memorable camp fires. I love the famous camp cookies, tin foil dinners, and sailing on Big Blue. This will be my 9th year at Pendalouan - and I couldn't pick a better place to be returning to this summer! Currently, I am working as a High School Physics & Biology teacher in Southern New Mexico and will be making the trek back up to Michigan for summer 2013. See you soon!

Hi there! My name is Courtney and I am thrilled to be this summer's Day Camp Director. This will be my first summer at Camp Pendalouan and I am counting down the days until it begins. I am from Ontario Canada, but have spent most of the last few years in college in West Virginia. I am currently working at Camp getting ready for summer and working with school groups in Pendalouan's Outdoor Education program. I love being outside and am so excited for Day Camp this summer! I can not wait for the campers to arrive!!

Hey everybody! My name is Elizabeth, and I'm so excited to come back to Pendalouan to be the Health Officer this summer! I've been wandering around the shores of Big Blue Lake for eleven years now, but this time, I will be armed with bandaids to spare. This year I'm graduating from the University of Notre Dame, so taking some time away from the books to spend the summer at Pendalouan is just what I need. Some of my favorite things about camp are foil dinners, archery, fun skits at chapel, and spending time out on Big Blue. I can't wait to sing to Mr. Zip Zip and sit around the campfire making memories with all of you this summer! See you soon!

We are thrilled to have Katie, Courtney and Elizabeth joining us this summer at Pendalouan in three of our leadership positions. We'll keep introducing staff here on the blog... so stay tuned to meet more amazing Pendalouan Summer 2013 Staff!

Parents, make sure your child is able to experience all the fun and character-building that these staff members will provide. Sign up for Summer Camp today; before our waiting lists start forming! Call us if you have any questions at (231) 894-4538.

Spring Volunteer Work Day Recap!

A week ago, a group of about 20 Alumni, Campers, Friends & Staff of Pendalouan got together to work on a few major projects around Camp for Pendalouan’s Annual Spring Volunteer Work Day! Over the course of the day, our volunteers:
  • Organized sine of Eddie Boersema's camp memorabilia
  • Tidied up Great Bear Fire Circle
  • Raked leaves away from buildings and walk ways
  • Reinstalled some steps to the classroom
  • Emptied a building of files that will be renovated soon
  • And cleared out decomposing leaves from the shoreline!

The event was a huge success! As Bruce Spoelman, Executive Director said while gathering for snacks at the end of the day, "It would have taken several weeks to accomplish all these activities on our own. With your help, we did it all in a day!" Several of these projects were especially timely, because there are very few days in the next several months when there is not a group in camp!

A special thanks to all who made it out to help us on these important projects and who made all this work possible!

Our 2013 Volunteers:
Andrea and Kameron Walter; Paul, Kara, Nolan and Landon Batt, Liz Taylor, Erik Veurink, Courtney Rzepka, Dan and Linda Parker, Bob Jakubowski Jr., Rob Klein, Matt Mason, Fenton Jones, Harry Conrad, Mark Olson, Daniel Munoz, Matthew, Lucy and Zach Abel, Hans and Dave Paulson, Bill Baldridge, Holli Mellick, Bruce Spoelman, Dan and Lori Willson, Bryan Poeppelman

We've had so many people asking about volunteering that we created a form on our website for those interested in volunteering for/at Pendalouan. Click here to see all of the opportunities! There is something for everyone and filling out the form does not commit you to anything! It only allows you to get notified when volunteer opportunities arise!

There is always work to do! Luckily, Pendalouan is blessed with a great group of individuals and families who care about Pendalouan and support it with their time and energy! Thanks again to all who volunteered for our work day and all of those individuals and families who volunteer throughout the year! Camp can't thrive without you! If you have any questions about volunteering, feel free to give us a call at camp at (231) 894-4538 or send Mark Olson, Alumni & Development Director, an email at molson@pendalouan.org.
